Pastor's Weekly Musing

Hey everyone!

Just so you know: it's never too late to follow God's calling on your life.

How many of us have wasted months, years, even decades of our lives as spectators in the Kingdom of God because we think we're not good enough? Or because we've made mistakes in the past? Or because we think we'll fail? Or because someone else is smarter of more capable? Or because we're too young, or too busy, or past our prime?

But if the Bible teaches us anything it's that NO ONE is too young, or too old, or too broken, or too whatever, to be used mightily in His Kingdom.

I love the story of Joshua and Caleb. Moses sent 12 spies to scout out the Promised Land, and 10 of them reported that the land was too hard a place for God's people to settle. Because of their unbelief, they wandered in the desert for 40 years, until an entire generation died off. Only Joshua and Caleb believed, so they survived.

After the 40 years of wandering ended, the Israelites returned to the Promised Land, and check out what Caleb said when he got there:

"Now then, the Lord has kept his promise. He has kept me alive for forty-five years from the time he said this to Moses during the time we all wandered in the desert. Now here I am, eighty-five years old. I am still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out, and I am just as ready to fight now as I was then. So give me the mountain country the Lord promised me that day long ago." (Joshua 14:10-12a NCV)

"Give me the mountain country" - what a great line! The land Caleb was referring to was fortified with large walls and was filled with giant warrior men. He was basically saying to God, "Give me the hardest assignment. Give me the toughest city. I'll take the mountain regions. I'm not coasting at the end of my life. I may be 85, but I got plenty in the tank, and I'm still called by God to do great things."

The same is true for you and I. Yes, there will always be reasons to stay on the sidelines in God's Kingdom, to remain a spectator, to never fully dive in. Always. But just like Caleb and Joshua, regardless of the season of life you are currently in, you're called, you're equipped, and you have the Spirit of God in you.

May the cry of my heart to God be like Caleb's: "Give me the mountain country!"

Amen?

This Sunday, we'll continue our January series, FIRST LOVE.

Whenever we talk about "coming back" or "refocusing" on Jesus, most of the time I try to think of the two or three things I can do -- some tweaks to my schedule or life -- to make it happen. And sometimes it works for awhile, but most of the time I run out of steam quickly. It can be shame-inducing. And come with a load of guilt. Why can't I get this right?

Well, what if you were told that you were closer than you think? What if Jesus Himself told you that you weren't far from being exactly where you want to be in your relationship with Him? But what if rather than being a few "tweaks" away, it's an entirely different way of thinking about your walk with Him? Come this Sunday and we'll chat about it.

Join us this Sunday for Part 4 - You're Not Far.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the walkway!
